Bloody Mary

"Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary."

"Bloody Mary" is an urban legend that has been passed down through many generations. Best known as a game played at young girl’s sleepovers, the legend says that if you say “Bloody Mary” three times in a darkened room in front of a mirror, then the spirit of Mary will appear in the mirror and hurt you in some way.

I’ve listed as many variations of "Bloody Mary" as I could find below, plus the history behind the legend.

This legend was used in the Supernatural episode, "Bloody Mary" (S1E5).

History of "Bloody Mary"

"Bloody Mary" most likely started out as a sleepover game passed between friends until it became the well-known urban legend that it is today.

The idea behind summoning a spirit from a mirror could come from the historical divination ritual that allowed young women to see the face of their future husband. The women would walk backwards upstairs, holding a candle and a mirror. They were supposedly able to see a glimpse of their future husband’s face. However, it was also believed that if they saw a skull, they would die before marriage.
